Grand Prix of France

After contemplating his options for a few days and talking further with his doctors, Pedrosa has decided to undergo surgery to repair his broken right collarbone, the result of the crash he suffered in the Grand Prix of France.

Dani Pedrosa undergoes surgery on his right collarbone

Dani has put his trust again in surgeons Dr. Joaquim Casañas and Dr. César García-Madrid, the same medical team at Teknon Medical Centre in Barcelona, who performed the operation on 6 April. At that time, they removed the plate from the left collarbone to decompress the subclavian artery.

In today's (Wednesday) operation performed at midday, a titanium plate was inserted to fix the fracture in the right collarbone. Following medical checks, the Repsol Honda rider will be discharged from hospital and in the next week he is expected to begin passive rehabilitation.
Dani's participation in the Grand Prix of Catalunya remains uncertain.

Rossi: “The Ducati is a proper prototype”

The Italian spoke for the first time as an official Ducati rider on Tuesday, discussing his views on the Desmosedici, his recovering shoulder and the forthcoming MotoGP season.

Rossi: “The Ducati is a proper prototype”
Valentino Rossi’s first Ducati impressions

Valentino Rossi spoke for the first time as a Ducati rider at the Wrooom 2011 event at Madonna di Campiglio on Tuesday, satisfying the demands of both media and fans as he discussed the Desmosedici.

Sporting Ducati’s red colours Rossi also talked to motogp.com, and started by joking: “I feel quite strange speaking in red! We were always big enemies with Ducati, so I need time to feel normal in this shirt!”

In an earlier press conference Rossi described the Ducati as “a proper prototype”, with a “different concept from the Japanese factories”, and a similarly pressing subject was that of his recovering shoulder.

“The problem was that the surgery was a lot heavier than expected because the damage was very big. The doctor said it wouldn’t be a problem to recover 100%, but that I’d need more time. From that moment I have worked hard. I expect to be fitter, but we have to put in 100% to be at the minimum level to ride for Sepang test,” explained Rossi to motogp.com in the attached video interview.

Following his first Test on the Desmosedici in Valencia last November, Rossi had surgery on his shoulder and said: “The big problem in Valencia was me. I had a lot of pain in the shoulder and not enough power.

This is a different bike and you have to ride it more aggressively. This is my work at Ducati, to improve it and make it an easier bike and have fewer risks in all the races. Stoner was unbelievable in some races last year but made some mistakes too and ended the Championship in fourth. So far we have been working on easier things such as rider position, handlebars, foot pegs for Sepang, and there we will start to work on improving the bike.”

The all-Italian partnership between the nine-times World Champion and the Borgo Panigale factory is one which has added to the excitement, and Rossi is well aware of the expectations.

“I will definitely have extra pressure with Ducati compared to the past, because a lot of fans around the world are curious about my performance with Ducati. We have to manage this and it will be very hard work – maybe we won’t be ready to win in the first races so I hope the fans will give us enough time.”

The 2011 campaign, in which Rossi said he sees Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner as “favourites” for the title, will also reunite him with former team-mate Nicky Hayden, something the 31 year-old is looking forward to. “I have always had a good relationship with Nicky since 2003 when we were team-mates with Honda,” he said. “I’m very happy to work with him. He’s a great guy and has experience on the Desmosedici, so maybe he will help us in the beginning. It will be completely open with no wall in the box.”

And finally, when asked when he expects to be in full flight on the GP11, Rossi added: “I hope when the summer starts.”

Rossi and Hayden enjoying the show

Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden have been the centre of attention at Madonna di Campiglio on Tuesday, the second day of the week-long Ducati event.

Wrooom 2011: Rossi and Hayden enjoying the show
Day 1 at the Wrooom MotoGP Press Ski Meeting
The wait was finally over for fans and media alike on Tuesday as Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden both spoke about the forthcoming 2011 season at the Wrooom event at Madonna di Campiglio.

Having arrived at the Italian venue on Monday evening to a frenzied media welcome, the Ducati MotoGP riders met Scuderia Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa as they posed for photographs in front of the waiting press.

On Tuesday morning the Ducati pair held individual press conferences as they fielded questions from the media, and following that motogp.com interviewed both Rossi and Hayden as each discussed the Desmosedici, the forthcoming season and the prospect of working alongside one another in 2011.

In the attached motogp.com video you can view a résumé of events so far at the 21st edition of the Wrooom event, as well as viewing photos of Rossi and Hayden in their 2011 colours in the Latest Photos section of the motogp.com site. Positive test in Estoril for Repsol Honda riders

The Repsol Honda Team returned to the Estoril circuit on Monday to resume development work on the RC212V in the first after-the-race test of the 2011 season.

Positive test in Estoril for Repsol Honda riders

Casey Stoner, recovering from the physical problems he suffered in his back on Sunday during the race, tested the new 2011 Öhlins front fork with various hydraulic settings, a new clutch and two new specification Bridgestone tyres.

Andrea Dovizioso also tested a new clutch which he found to reduce 'hopping', and he also completed a tyre test with Bridgestone.

After his great victory on Sunday, Dani Pedrosa chose to complete only 17 laps and reduce his testing program due to his recent surgery and the effort it took for him to take part in the 28 lap race. Pedrosa completed a few laps with the modified clutch.

Casey Stoner – 1’36.602
“We haven't had a lot to test, there aren't really any new parts, we tried a different system on the clutch which was fine but not actually improving on what we have. We tried a few Bridgestone tyres with a new construction and compound, they were definitely an improvement especially on the left side, so that went well.

We tested the new 2011 fork and everything worked well with them, last time we tried them we had some issues with chattering but we seem to have fixed that now. This is a big improvement as these forks work better on the bumps and on the brakes so hopefully we can continue to use them in the future. The beginning of the day my back was really sore and difficult to ride with but then it eased a little as the day progressed, so I hope it continues to get better.”

Andrea Dovizioso – 1’37.460
“Today we tested a new clutch that gave us positive feedback and we had less hopping. We also tested two different settings that gave me a better feeling under braking. In general I was riding more comfortable than during the race weekend. Bridgestone also brought two new rear tyres but the feeling was not so good as I had some chattering on the front. Anyway, it has been a positive test and I'm looking forward to the next races.”

Dani Pedrosa – 1’37.679
“The shoulder is a bit better than last night thanks to some muscle relaxing tablets I took, but I've still got a lot of pain. I did a few laps with the bike I used yesterday for the race, but I saw immediately that I wouldn't be able to do the full program today. I tried one modified clutch looking to reduce the hopping, the bumping on the rear we have when we release the clutch.

It's a shame not be able to profit from this test because we wanted to also try the new 2011 front fork and rear shock to get more traction, but I was unable to do it. Now, the plan before Le Mans race is to rest as much as I can for three or four days, trying to recover. Then I must check what is the best technique to relax the muscles, because it would be good to arrive in Le Mans in good shape and not so tense.”

Dani Pedrosa on Spanish success in MotoGP

The brilliant tactical victory by Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa in last weekend's Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril was further evidence of the dominance of Spanish riders.

Dani Pedrosa on Spanish success in MotoGP

After last year's MotoGP World Championship, there can be no question that the best road racers in the world are Spanish. For the first time ever, riders from the same country won all three classes in the Road Racing World Championship and that country was Spain.

Spanish world champions are nothing new. Angel Nieto is second all-time with 13 world championships. But those titles came in the 60's, 70's and 80's in the smaller displacement classes. It wasn't until 1999 that Alex Criville became the first Spaniard to win a title in the premier class.

And it would be more than a decade before another Spaniard, Jorge Lorenzo, took the first MotoGP World Championship back to Spain. The next one won't take as long.

No country supports motorcycle racing more than Spain and no rider embodies the Spanish system more than Dani Pedrosa. The triple World Champion from Sabadell, in the rider-rich region of Catalunya, is not only a product of the system that has produced a host of strong riders, but also active in making sure the system prospers.

Last year Pedrosa had his best season ever, winning four times and finishing second twice. This season has started even better. Pedrosa was third in Qatar, second in Jerez, and in Portugal last weekend won a thrilling battle with fellow countryman Lorenzo to take an unexpected 13th MotoGP victory.

Pedrosa entered the race unsure if his surgically repaired left shoulder would withstand the rigors of the race. The shoulder and collarbone were painful and uncomfortable, but not debilitating, and Pedrosa made an impressive late race surge to lead the Repsol Honda team to a 1-3-4 finish. Casey Stoner was third, Andrea Dovizioso fourth.

The Spanish government, which finances circuit development, deserves some of the credit; the country has more world class race tracks than any other country. Four rounds of the MotoGP World Championship run in Spain and there are a number of very good facilities that are just below world level. Learning their craft on safe tracks allows riders to concentrate 100% on racing, which prepares them for the world stage. Five of the seven races in the CEV Buckler Spanish national championship are held on grand prix tracks.

The CEV Buckler has been run by Dorna, the MotoGP rights holder, since 1998 as a steppingstone to MotoGP. Their aim has been to develop young talent to move to the next level. The class structure mimics MotoGP, with 125cc, Moto2, though not with control engines, and a big bore class.

The day before Pedrosa won at the Estoril Circuit, and between qualifying, debriefing, and physical therapy, we sat down with Dani in Honda's hospitality unit to find out why he and his fellow countryman are on top of the road racing world.

Binder takes Red Bull Rookies race one win in Portugal

The South African rider won the first of the two Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup races at Estoril on Saturday.

Binder takes Red Bull Rookies race one win in Portugal

Brad Binder expunged the frustration of the Jerez weekend by totally dominating the first race in Estoril ahead of Arthur Sissis and Lorenzo Baldassarri. The 15 year old South African set off from pole and led from 1st lap to last and even though 15 year old Arthur Sissis and 14 year old Italian Baldassarri were right with him early on, neither could match his pace.

“I just put my head down and went as hard as I could from the start,” said Binder. “When I saw the gap was 4 seconds I realised that it was going OK but I wanted to keep pushing and I only eased up right at the end. In fact I almost crashed at the chicane on the last lap when the front tucked but I got away with it.”

Sissis accepted that there was nothing he could do. “I got into second and went as hard as I could but there was no chance of matching Brad today, he was gone. My bike was sliding around quite a lot so the set up can be improved for sure. We'll have a look at things and see what we can change for tomorrow. I hope we can find something and that I can race with Brad.” Sissis jumps into the Cup points lead, 10 clear of Binder and Philipp Oettl, who misses this weekend following a testing crash that resulted in a broken collarbone.

Baldassarri also hopes that some suspension work will make the difference to his race tomorrow. “I enjoyed the race a lot, I went as hard as I could but I couldn't race with Brad and Arthur. My bike was moving around a lot, we had so little dry track time and I am new to the Rookies bike so we just didn't have it well set up. Hopefully we can make some improvement, if we can I think I can race with them tomorrow.”

Though the lead trio became well spread out the fight for 4th could not have been more intense. It was 16 year old Frenchman Alan Techer who snatched the place on the line after Xavi Pinsach, the 14 year old Spaniard ran wide coming out of the last corner and dropped from 4th to 7th. Joakim Niemi, the 16 year old Finn stole 5th ahead of 14 year old Portuguese local hero Ivo Lopes with Aaron España, the 13 year old Spaniard 8th.

España had done a superb job to fight through from 15th on lap one pulling 17 year old Czech Tomas Vavrous with him into a battle for 4th that at the time also included Lukas Trautmann and Andrea Migno. The group split up and Vavrous crashed leaving 15 year old Italian Migno a good 9th ahead of Trautmann, the 15 year old German.

“That was so much fun,” said Pinsach. “The bike was really working well and I enjoyed battling with the guys. You can't break away from a group like that they just have your slipstream. I knew that I had to push hard coming through the last corner. I was as hard as I dare on the throttle and the bike just ran wide, I couldn't stop it. Never mind, I tried.”

Lopes agreed that it just came down to the last corner. “We had such a fight I could get in front but I couldn't get away, the other guys were just holding my slipstream all the time. I was pushing so hard on that last lap, coming through the last right the back was sliding, sliding, I just held on to it.”

Sissis victorious in Rookies race two at Estoril

Arthur Sissis charged to his 2nd Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup victory of the year at Estoril on Sunday. The 15 year old Australian was chased all the way by 14 year old Italian Lorenzo Baldassari. The duo raced away from an intense battle for 3rd that went in favour of 14 year old Spaniard Xavi Pinsach on the final lap.

Sissis victorious in Rookies race two at Estoril

Saturday's winner Brad Binder led from the start as he did 24 hours earlier but this time the 15 year old South African fell on lap 2 as he tried to take advantage of the clear road ahead of him. He remounted but needed repairs at the pits before he could finish the race, which he did but scored no points.

That propels Cup leader Sissis into a 27 point lead over Baldassarri with Binder a further 8 points adrift, tied in 3rd with 14 year old German Philipp Oettl who missed this weekend through injury. Sissis was thrilled with his 3rd podium of the season. “I really enjoyed that, we'd made some changes to the bike after yesterday and it was a lot better but I knew that racing with Brad was not going to be easy. He got another great start and I just tried to go with him. Then he highsided in front of me and that made things a lot easier.”

“I still had Lorenzo on my tail and I knew from my pit board he was right with me. I didn't want to make any mistakes so I waited till the last few laps to really push and try and get away. I was still expecting him to try and outbrake me so I was covering the inside line on the last few laps. I looked behind after crossing the line and he wasn't that close,” concluded the speedway star fast becoming an accomplished road racer.

Just as it had been yesterday the battle behind the leaders was the most intense. This time it was even more crucial as it was for the final rostrum place. It was the same players, Alan Techer, Ivo Lopes, Joakim Niemi and Xavi Pinsach with the position changing at every corner. Portuguese 14 year old Lopes highsided out of the action on lap 14 of the 16.

That left a trio fighting for 3rd and on the final lap Finnish 16 year old Niemi made his bid braking for the chicane. He had third for a second but the front tucked and he was down. That took 16 year old Frenchman Techer wide and handed 3rd to Pinsach. “It was a great fight again,” said the Spaniard. “I tried everything to get 3rd and then it just worked out that way. Much better than the way it worked out yesterday,” he said referring to the fact that he had lost 4th on the run in to the line.

Techer was frustrated to lose the 3rd that should probably have been his. “Of course I am disappointed, I thought I had it on the last lap then Joakim came inside, fell and I almost ran into him. Still that is racing, we had another great battle and I got some good points. I'm looking forward to Silverstone.”

Binder was obviously terribly disappointed missing out on a perfect weekend after his pole position and a dominant win on Saturday. “I made a mistake back shifting coming into the corner, I didn't get it down enough gears. I tried to carry more momentum to keep it going, I didn't want to change down in the middle of the corner but then the back came around and threw me off. I knew that I'd hurt my finger pretty much right away. I came into the pits to fix the bike and I really wanted to finish the race. The finger was painful but it's just a small fracture in the little finger on my right hand and I could race tomorrow if I had to.”

Red Bull Rookies up for Estoril

Red Bull Rookies up for Estoril

The bwin Grande Prémio de Portugal this weekend sees the third and fourth races of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup take place at the Estoril circuit, and the participants will head to the track confident in the circuit knowledge they gained in a three-day pre-season test back in March.

Bad luck has struck for two of the Rookies however, who must sit out the Estoril races. Cup points leader Philipp Oettl will be absent due to a broken collarbone, which the youngster sustained testing his German championship bike on April 9th. Frenchman Florian Alt will also not be present, as he continues to recover from a finger injury picked up at the opening weekend in Jerez. Xavier Pinsach and Javier Orellana, who both injured shoulders at Jerez, are due to be fit for Estoril.

In Oettl’s absence Arthur Sissis, Aaron Espana and Brad Binder, who trail him in the table, will aim to cut down the German’s advantage. Sissis won race two at Jerez and was fastest at the Portugal test in both wet and dry conditions, and currently trails Oettl by ten points.

With 44 TV broadcasters around the world showing the race action there is ample opportunity to follow the young heroes and for those not covered by the spread of live TV the live race feed can always be seen on http://oto-trendz.blogspot.com/, where the latest news and information can also be found.

There will be three practice sessions for the Rookies on Friday, with first race scheduled for Saturday at 16.30 CET and race two for Sunday at 16.00 CET.

Suter test MotoGP machine at Estoril

The Swiss chassis manufacturer ran its developing 2012 MotoGP prototype at the Portuguese circuit following the bwin Grande Prémio de Portugal.

Suter test MotoGP machine at Estoril

Swiss chassis manufacturer Suter closed two days of a Test of its developing 2012 MotoGP machine at the Estoril circuit on Wednesday, in a continuation of its preparations for entry into next season’s premier class World Championship.

Working with development partners the Marc VDS Racing Team the Swiss-made machine, which uses a BMW engine, is being designed to take advantage of the new Technical Regulations which come into effect in 2012 and allow a maximum engine capacity of 1,000cc.

Profiting from sunny conditions at Estoril an advanced version of the prototype with a more powerful version of the BMW S1000RR engine, a completely revised electronics package, and carbon brakes was rolled out. The evolving machine, which was previously tested last November and again in February, was ridden by test riders Damian Cudlin and Carmelo Morales.

Morales, currently competing in the Moto2 category of the CEV Buckler (Spanish National Championship) noted major improvements in the machine, which included a successful adaptation to Bridgestone tyres that were used on the prototype for the first time. The Japanese manufacturer, official tyre supplier to the MotoGP class, worked closely with the team and Suter throughout the day.

Australian Cudlin stated at the conclusion of Wednesday: “It took a little bit of time to adjust to the changes to the bike, mainly the Bridgestone tyres, the carbon brakes and the new electronics package, but I think we managed to work our way through the whole test program at Estoril.”

“The bike has certainly been improved since the Jerez test at the end of last year, but there's still a lot of work to do. Getting the electronics package working properly will be critical if the bike is to be competitive, and this is what we were focused on during the second day.

We saw some improvements, and collected a lot of data, but we definitely need more track time if we're going to get everything dialled in properly. Overall it was a very positive test, and we leave Estoril with a very clear idea of the direction we need to take with the development of the bike."

Bridgestone Bersiap Hadapi MotoGP 2012

MotoGP 2011 memang belum berakhir.

Lorenzo Tingkatkan Kecepatan Menikung

Foto: Jorge Lorenzo/Reuters

Rossi: Dovi Permainkan Saya

“Saya pikir, dia sedikit mempermainkan saya.
